What is Skin Rejuvenation?
Advanced skin rejuvenation is most commonly used to minimise the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. It is also effective in treating facial scars and areas of uneven pigmentation and can be practiced on delicate areas of skin such as the chest, neck and hands.
At Vive we utilize the Palomar StarLux 1540 Laser System which delivers energy in an array of narrow, focussed microbeams, to create columns of coagulation (heat) within the skin. The heated tissue within the columns initiates a natural healing process which forms new, healthy tissue. This results in a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture. This is a non-ablative method of skin re-surfacing, unlike some skin treatment devices, such as CO2 lasers, which use the ablative method: removing the epidermis and some of the dermis. Whilst a good result is eventually seen, the drawbacks of ablative methods include red and raw skin, and a risk of infection for several weeks after treatment. With the StarLux 1540, beams penetrate deeper into the dermis for effective, long-term results. This fractional non-ablative approach stimulates quick healing in the dermis, while leaving the epidermis intact (significantly reducing risk of infection), with no lasting redness.
The process improves the appearance of skin by affecting only a fraction of skin at a time, using microscopic laser points and a patented cooling system which limits discomfort.
This treatment method allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area was treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue. Treatment lasts around 30 minutes and can usually be performed using only topical anaesthesia.
The treatment consists of 3 to 5 sessions, each being around 4 weeks apart. Results are immediate and optimal improvement is usually visible within 2 to 3 months. Side effects of this procedure are minimal and patients may experience the sensation of mild sunburn for an hour or 2, with skin being slightly pink for up to a week.
Following the treatment, a high SPF sunscreen of at least 30 plus, should be used at least twice daily to protect skin from sun exposure during the healing phase and for several months after treatment has ended.
